#SEXIESTMANALIVE PATRICK DEMPSEY PLAYS THE SHERIFF IN A MURDER-PLAGUED TOWN IN ELI ROTH’S “THANKSGIVING”

Image
For his holiday horror movie Thanksgiving, director Eli Roth brought the cast together very quickly – and first to join the film was Patrick Dempsey – McDreamy himself and People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2023. In the slasher movie, Dempsey plays Sheriff Newlon, who has the unenviable job of investigating the gruesome deaths that pile up like food on a Thanksgiving plate in his town. Dempsey had two main reasons for wanting to join the cast: “My son wanted me to do a horror film,” he explains, “and I wanted to wear a uniform.” In the movie, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday. Picking off residents one by one, what begins as random revenge killings are soon revealed to be part of a larger, sinister holiday plan. Dempsey is joined by younger cast members who play local high schoolers, including Nell Verlaque, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Tomaso Sanelli, Gabriel Davenport, Jenna Warren and...

“I found him to be a much more complex person than I imagined,” Joaquin Phoenix says of his titular character in “Napoleon”

Image
When Scott Ridley saw Joaquin Phoenix’s Academy Award®-winning performance in Joker, the director was reminded of their collaboration on Gladiator, and he knew that Phoenix would be perfect for the titular role in his new film Napoleon: “I saw him and it all came flooding back – how we worked on Gladiator, and what journey he went on with that character, and I thought, ‘God damn, there’s Napoleon.’” Phoenix admits that he did not know much about the iconic French emperor before joining the project, and was surprised at some facets of the character that he discovered. “I found him to be a much more complex person than I initially imagined, especially the dynamic between him and Josephine,” says the actor who plays Napoleon. “I found him mysterious, and that mystery is something that is always interesting to explore.” Watch director Scott and actress Vanessa Kirby talk about the “Unique Genius of Joaquin Phoenix” in this vignette: https://youtu.be/t-GzKyT3xO8 Phoenix’s understan...

BIG-SCREEN SPECTACLE “WONKA,” IS “THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS MOVIE,” SAYS DIRECTOR PAUL KING

Image
When director Paul King, known for the family-favorite Paddington movies, was a child, one of the first books he read was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by beloved children’s book author Roald Dahl. “I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” says King. “I read it again and again until the pages fell out of the cover. I remember loving the wild comedy, all the crazy characters, and the magic and mayhem of the chocolate factory.” Years later, King would read it again from the perspective of an adult – and he found new things to love about the story! “When David [Heyman, producer] mentioned the idea of making a Wonka movie, I read it again and realized it also has an incredibly rich, almost Dickensian emotional core,” shares the director. “Charlie is such a kind, decent little boy and his family’s poverty causes them such suffering. The fact he goes on to inherit the factory, a more wonderful gift than he could ever have dreamt, had me in floods of tears – and the prospect of tryi...

FILMING A GREAT KILL SCENE IN A HORROR MOVIE IS A BADGE OF HONOR FOR “THANKSGIVING” DIRECTOR ELI ROTH

Image
The heart of any slasher movie is the kills, and Eli Roth – the genre’s maestro – would make sure that Thanksgiving reflected his best work. “Every kill had to meet our standards of scare and gore,” says the Thanksgiving director. “If the movie didn’t deliver on its promise, we’d be dead.” And Roth had the added pressure of having done it already when he made a fake Thanksgiving movie trailer upon the request of his friend Quentin Tarantino, as part of the latter’s Grindhouse double-feature with another fan-favorite director Robert Rodriguez. “I found myself not just trying to match what I did in the trailer, but trying to top it in every way possible,” continues Roth. Which is why early on, Roth began discussing the project with prosthetics genius Adrien Morot (The Whale, for which he won the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar®). “His craftsmanship is second to none,” shares Roth. “Adrien and his wife Kathy made the most incredibly realistic and beautiful heads and body parts I...

“IT WAS SUCH A PRIVILEGE TO LEARN ABOUT JOSEPHINE,” SAYS VANESSA KIRBY ABOUT PLAYING THE ONE TRUE LOVE OF “NAPOLEON”

Image
Before playing Josephine in Ridley Scott’s action epic Napoleon, Vanessa Kirby took a deep-dive into the character by reading and studying as much as she could. “I was actually quite astonished that I knew so little,” she says. “So it was a pleasure: I locked myself away and just read every book I could, about her and about him [Napoleon, played by Academy Award® winner Joaquin Phoenix]. We also went to Paris, to the Napoleon Museum, to Malmaison. I even went to Josephine’s tomb. It was a deep immersion in that history and that period, and it was such a privilege to learn about her.” Watch Kirby talk more about Josephine in this featurette: Josephine Behind the Scenes A privilege, but not easy – playing the role was “painful and uncomfortable,” she says, because “it is the story of so many women. I had so much compassion for her, because she wasn’t allowed to have a voice even though she had an incredibly strong, potent energy.” Kirby says that energy might have been what at...

FROM TRAILER TO MOVIE: DIRECTOR ELI ROTH TALKS ABOUT MAKING HIS SLASHER- HORROR MOVIE "THANKSGIVING"

Image
FROM TRAILER TO MOVIE: DIRECTOR ELI ROTH TALKS ABOUT MAKING HIS SLASHER-HORROR MOVIE “THANKSGIVING” For director Eli Roth, his journey for the Thanksgiving movie started in 2006, when his friends Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez were working on their double feature Grindhouse. To add to the double-feature experience, Tarantino asked his friends – including Roth – to create fake trailers that would appeal to the Grindhouse crowd. And Roth knew exactly what he wanted to do. Watch the red band trailer: https://youtu.be/4_qBoUJz8D0 In his youth and teenage years, Roth and his friend Jeff Rendell, who would co-write Thanksgiving, took in a steady diet of horror films, consuming VHS after VHS of carnage, chaos, and gore. And one special subgenre kept them busy. “We came of age in the early ’80s, the golden era of the holiday slasher movie,” he recalls. “Black Christmas, Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, April Fool’s Day, New Year’s Evil… When we saw Silent Night, Deadly Night, we ...
